I spent last week skiing and exploring the area around the town of Melipeuco, close to Parque Nacional Conguillo. I had visited this valley once before, many years ago. It was great to get back and see it in a new light. This is interesting spot. It's in the middle of several national parks and wilderness preserves and is on the way to a border crossing to Argentina; yet it remains pretty untouched by tourism. It is sandwiched between Llaima and Villarrica, but feels like a different world compared to Pucón. We had a lot of rain, so we spent some time hiking in the valleys and exploring some of the roads in the area. There's a lot to do here. Of particular note is the availability of some tree skiing and a lot of good hiking trails. It's a nice place to be during stormy weather. Sollipulli and Sierra Nevada aren't very difficult either, so it would be a great place for folks looking to get into ski touring. I look forward to returning here someday. Lots left to do!
