Last Minute Plans!

The snow has begun to fall in the southern hemisphere and I am getting ready to head south for my 10th consecutive winter in my favorite place on Earth.  I will definitely keep this blog up-to-date throughout the southern winter, and I want to start with some quick updates.

Don't be deterred by the low snowfall totals to date.  At this time of year, most of the snow reports and photos come from the well-known ski resorts in both Chile and Argentina.  Unfortunately, for the fourth year in a row, they are off to a slow start.  This is a product of ocean temperatures well off the coast of South America and its effect on the Humboldt Current.  The northern areas are in an unfortunate pattern.  However...  The south, where the volcanos standout proudly, still get plenty of snow for great spring conditions.  If anything, the weather pattern means slightly longer periods of high pressure, which allow for even more skiing.  I anticipate another banner "corn season."

My calendar for the season is nearly full.  I remain committed to running the highest-quality trips in Chile, and for the time being that means I will remain a very small operation.  I will not over-sell trips and hire other guides this season.  For this reason space is limited.

At the moment there are two spots available on a trip to ski volcanoes from September 14th to 21st.  We will ski Volcanoes Mocho-Choshuenco, Casa Blanca and Osorno.  This is a great trip for people who have done some ski touring and want to ski all day, but aren't looking for the most extreme terrain in the world.  I describe this trip as playful and low-stress, but certainly not boring or run of the mill.  The landscape is out of this world and each day offers lots of great skiing in a "choose your own adventure" kind of style.  The lodging is incredible and we really get to see a genuine side of Chile.  The cost for the trip is $2900 per person or $2700 per person if signing up as a pair.  Send me a note for more details.

The week of September 21st to 28th is also available for a customized trip.  Put together a group and let's make a plan!  We could ski three or four peaks as a tour or spend the week focused on one area.  Both the Villarrica and Puyehue volcanoes offer more than enough skiing to keep a group busy for a week!  Anything is possible and I can create a package for a variety of budgets.

That's it for now.  Stay tuned for at least weekly updates as the season progresses.  I arrive to Chile on August 11th and am there until late October, so there will be plenty to share.

Saludos!  Donny
