Ski Mountaineering Volcanoes in Chile
In my opinion, the best combination of skiing, adventure and culture is found while skiing the iconic volcanoes of Chile.
As the Andes stretch south, past Santiago, they become smaller until the cordillera changes character from a huge range to one of smaller, weather-worn hills with dramatic volcanoes reaching upward. The landscape is one of massive forests and lakes with snow-capped peaks dominating the horizon.
For about a four-or five-week period in September and early October, these volcanoes offer up prime skiing conditions. The heavy storms of mid-winter have deposited meters of snow; but the spring is arriving, bringing clearer weather and the ability to get up on the peaks. While lingering storms bring the occasional powder day, corn snow is the real prize of the area – it's regularly the best corn I have ever skied.
There are dozens of volcanoes in this area, each with their own character and adventure. I have skied most of them; but there are twelve that standout as fantastic peaks for people looking to get the most of a limited amount of time in Chile. These are the peaks I choose to guide regularly. Each has their own character, from technical difficulty to commitment level to skiing challenge. I know these peaks intimately and will find the right fit for you.
I set aside five-weeks each year for guiding these peaks. For 2017, the available dates begin on September 14th and finish on October 14th. This is prime time for good skiing. Of these dates I will only actually guide about three-weeks. I do this for a variety of reasons. The most important is that no one wants to ski with a tired guide that always feels behind in his work. I also use the time between clients to make sure that no detail is missed - from making sure the gear is in perfect order to ensuring the food will be outstanding.
Ideally, we begin talking well in advance. Planning a year ahead of time is not crazy. Once we settle on an itinerary, and a deposit is made, I am at your service for planning every detail of your trip – from flights, to gear, to tips about Chile, to training for touring and beyond.
My goal with these trips is very simple: I want to share an incredible, human-powered ski experience, as well as a landscape and culture that I adore, with small-groups of dedicated skiers of any ability. I am absolutely confident that you cannot find a better combination of intimate, local knowledge; the standard of care that comes with a trained, professional guide; the passion of someone that loves exploring this landscape; and the level of service you are accustomed to as an experienced traveler from a modern culture.
Every trip I guide is custom built for individual groups. A cornerstone of both safe backcountry travel and pleasant travel experiences is working with small groups that share a team spirit. For this reason, each trip starts with you and your goals.
You need the following as we begin our conversation:
- A small group - between one and four people
- A basic time frame - between four-and sixteen-days
- A general idea of your goals for the trip
With this information we can begin to build your dream trip. We create an itinerary that includes peaks appropriate for your ability and goals, as well as accommodations and food that suits your budget and needs.
I realize that it's difficult to envision the experience and create a clear picture. You don't need to – I will paint it for you soon! To read more about individual peaks, some suggested combinations, and pricing click on the Trip Planner button below.
